Do You Want To Heal,
Or Cover Up Your Symptoms?

Three Things You Need To Know
About Alternative Medicine
Before You Make Up Your Mind

1. Chinese Medicine Is a (W)holistic Health Care System,
Designed To Take  YOU—In Your Entirety—Into Account,
To Help Eliminate the Root Cause of Your Problem

    The Eastern mindset sees the body as a cohesive ONE—a complex system where everything within it is inter-connected—where each part affects all other parts. Lack of balance within this biological system is the precursor to all illness. The body exhibits symptoms when suffering from inner dis-ease and if it is not re-balanced, these symptoms may lead to acute or chronic illnesses of all kinds.

    The acupuncture physician examines and figures out the root cause through questioning, mental and physical observation and palpation.

  •         • Questions cover a wide span of issues, from emotional state to bodily functions, to areas of pain and discomfort.
  •         • Tongue diagnosis, looking at the eyes and the coloration of the skin, is done to discover the current state of internal functions, or dysfunctions, which leave visible clues in these areas. He may also observe speech patterns, agitation, signs of depression and other non-visible clues, through the act of listening.
  •         • Palpation, such as feeling the pulses and touching the skin to check for dryness, moisture, hardness or pliability, is also done to gain insight about the inner state of the body-system.

    Based on this information, the acupuncturist comes up with a diagnosis and can offer you the treatments most suitable to remedy the ailment presented.

    The beauty with Chinese medicine is that, unlike allopathic medicine, it does not simply disguise the symptoms. Rather the treatment is geared to hit the internal root of the problem—which oftentimes has little or no apparent connection with the symptom on the outside—and the symptoms are relieved because the underlying cause is either re-balanced, or removed.

    In essence, your natural state of physical health is re-established.

2.  Say Sayonara! to Side-Effects Worse Than the Original Complaint, And Prepare Yourself For This Special Bonus Instead

    Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)—, which includes herbal therapy—is powerful medicine, yet remarkably safe with few, if any, negative side effects. Most herbal remedies have an extremely low toxicity compared to Western drugs, including common over-the-counter pills and potions.

    If you do experience any kind of negative reaction to your herbal formula, it usually dissipates quickly if you stop taking it, and the formula can easily be modified until there are no such side effects. You will not be given a second—or third—formula to counteract the side effects from the first, as is the norm when taking pharmaceutical drugs.

    Acupuncture and TCM also has the added boon of POSITIVE side effects! Who knew? Well, the ancients did… for starters. And now, you do as well. The reason for this remarkable windfall of good health is quite simple.

    A Root problem, or “root dis-ease in the system,” usually leads to not only one, but a multitude of physical, mental and emotional symptoms. Western medicine actually agrees with this one. High blood pressure, for example, can lead to dizziness, headaches, fainting spells and even emotional disturbances, as well as heart or kidney disease and stroke. So a patient presenting chronic headaches, dizziness and the early stages of kidney disease is not coming in with a multitude of SEPARATE problems. They’re all connected, via the root problem causing the high blood pressure.

    Here’s where our Eastern/Western paths often veer apart at sharp angles. Allopathic (aka Western) medicine puts you on a pill to artificially force your blood pressure down. (This is why you have to “tinker” with the dosages. Your body has no say in the matter; it simply has to respond to the chemical introduced into your system.)

    Eastern medicine, on the other hand, will try to figure out the root cause of the high blood pressure. It’s not normal. Why? There’s a reason. Once the diagnosis has been made, the herbal and/or acupuncture treatments will prompt the body to re-balance itself, so that the blood pressure can return to normal. Since the body is in charge—it’s not artificially forced to respond—it will do so at its own pace, and usually without troublesome side effects.

    And here’s the sweet spot: when the root cause of the high blood pressure is diminished or removed completely, the dizziness and the headaches subside. The kidney disease is given the opportunity to go into remission. AND, the patient may suddenly find that she’s sleeping better, sweating and flushing less, has greater stamina, less fatigue, more “regular” bowel movements, clearer skin... all positive side effects from finally getting the internal system back into optimal functionality.

    The only disclosure needed here would be, “positive side effects are varied and based on individual physiological makeup, health history and level of previous disharmony compared to current equilibrium.”

3.  “I Have Six Blocked Arteries, But I Don’t Want Surgery...
Can Acupuncture Help?”

    Listen. This is where the words “reasonable expectations” and “common sense” come in handy.

    If you have six blocked arteries, go straight to your surgeon and have those bad boys unblocked pronto, so you can live to ask another question. Do not call me or stop by my office saying, “I have about six months to live, but I’ve really thought about it, and I’ve decided to go alternative.” All I can say then is, “Y’a should’a come sooner.”

    Sufficient time is essential when dealing with chronic symptoms and illnesses. If it took you years to get it, it will take some—but not necessarily equal—time for the body to reverse the damage and heal itself again.

    In Chinese Medicine’s terms, acupuncturists treat an imbalance of Chi—bioenergy—whereas Western terms divides each ailment into neat little symptoms/syndromes and named illnesses. What this means is that acupuncture and Chinese medicine can treat anything... Regardless of what the Western term for the symptom/syndrome/illness is, because the acupuncturist is not treating that specific ailment. He’s treating the underlying dysfunctional energy within the body, which is now presenting itself as an ailment.

    As long as the problem is not immediately life threatening,acupuncture and TCM is a great tool for increasing health and overall well-being. It can also help with serious illnesses that are in the beginning stages, so that there is sufficient time for the treatments to work and for the body to heal itself. But if you’re a ticking time bomb, call in the Bomb Squad, not the Park Rangers!

Rule of thumb for alternative medicine—when in doubt, start early.
Nothing beats prevention when it comes to increasing your health
and maximizing your life span.

Licensed vs. Qualified

Without Knowing the Answers To These Two Questions...

    Unlike what some people think, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is not some “accessory” form of alternative treatment that can be learned, and practiced successfully from an online course or a book or two.

    TCM is a broad-spectrum healthcare system that requires both depth and breadth of knowledge in order to attain desired results. This can only be achieved through rigorous schooling and clinical internship.

    Question # 1: Is your acupuncturist licensed?
    This should be a no-brainer. You wouldn’t see an MD without a medical license; neither should you put your body in the hands of an acupuncture physician without one.

    In the state of Florida acupuncture physicians’ training and scope of practice includes, but is not limited to:

        Diagnose ailments according to TCM theory (meaning, they will not diagnose a common cold as a “common cold”, but rather as the underlying cause, which could be something like “wind-cold” for a cold with a runny nose. Or “wind-heat” for congestion with thick mucus.)
  •         Perform acupuncture with sterilized, single-use needles
  •         Perform other forms of non-needle acupuncture, such as acupressure or use of electronic acupuncture devices
  •         Perform electrical stimulation
  •         Inject natural substances (herbs, vitamins & homeopathic remedies)
  •         Bleeding, or bloodletting (which can relieve certain ailments)
  •         Tui-na (Chinese Massage)
  •         Prescribe herbal remedies

    Question # 2:  What is your practitioner's formal TCM training?

    This is where many people go wrong when trying out acupuncture or TCM.

    They find a licensed acupuncturist, but… they don’t realize their practitioner may not have the proper training to actually understand all the complex theories and inter-woven systems necessary for making a proper diagnosis, treatment and prescription under TCM.

    Qualified acupuncture physicians attend a four-year course of study for their Masters Degree of Oriental Medicine, which includes

  •         The foundations of Chinese medicine, founded on the principles of Yin/Yang, the Five Elements and Zang-fu.
  •         They learn the inter-connections of the meridians and the flow of energy within the body;
  •         more than 450 acupuncture points and their corresponding connections within the body and the internal organs (both on an energetic and biological level);
  •         Western anatomy and physiology;
  •         Western and Eastern pathology and lab reading;
  •         the mind/body connection, and
  •         their clinical practice spans across the full course of study.
A licensed AP comes out with no less than 2,700 hours of knowledge
in their heads and under their belt.

That said, did you know that in the state of Florida,
chiropractors are allowed to add Acupuncture to their credentials
with a mere 100 hours of study?

And if that’s not absurd enough - MD’s and DO’s are allowed to practice Acupuncture WITHOUT ANY FORMAL TRAINING whatsoever!

"Krikey!"

    Would you let an acupuncturist--with a maximum of three weeks’ worth of book knowledge about surgery--cut you open? Thought not.

    TCM is about re-balancing the energies within the body—making it flow harmoniously as a whole again—thereby allowing the body to heal itself. This cannot be achieved unless you know how everything is inter-connected and how increasing or decreasing “the flow” in one area will affect the whole.

    It’s not about sticking needles in arbitrary spots—it’s both a bioenergetic science and a healing art.

    Now, this doesn’t mean that some MD’s and Chiropractors won’t go through yet another four years of schooling to become AP’s. Some do! And it can be a winning combination. But you won’t know unless you ASK them about their formal TCM training, in addition to making sure they’re licensed.

It could very well be the difference between leaving with the idea that “Acupuncture is a bunch of baloney,” versus “Wow! I feel so much better.
This stuff really works!”

And when it comes to your health, surely it’s worth trying something new in order to cure what ails you.

    Unless, of course, you’re particularly fond of the “severe stomach upset, debilitating nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, pounding headache, numbness, tingling, dizziness, dry mouth, excessive sweating, chronic fatigue, muscle pain and weakness, scary seizures, frustrating insomnia, chest pain, undue agitation, inexplicable weight gain, loss of vision, kidney failure, rectal bleeding, and in some rare cases viral brain infections, heart failure, decreased respiration and death” –type “cures.” In which case you’ve meandered onto the wrong site… but something tells me, you’re here for a reason.
